Guinean and sahelian rainfall anomaly indices at annual and monthly scales (1933-1990)

1994

The annual and monthly rainfall variability in north tropical Africa are analysed by principal component analysis in order to detect the main coherent modes. The Sahel constitutes the first mode, although it is divided close to 1O"W into an Atlantic section and a Continental section. The Guinean zone is less coherent, and is divided into distinct modes. The subequatorial area never formed a distinct mode. Rainfall variability for the coherent areas is constructed from rainfall anomaly indices (RAI), based on the coherent areas, and a rainfall typology taking into account the spatial pattern of the rainfall anomaly fields and the intensity of the anomaly. Their evolution (mainly since 1950) …

Effects of food abundance and early clutch predation on reproductive timing in a high Arctic shorebird exposed to advancements in arthropod abundance.

2016

12 pages; International audience; Climate change may influence the phenology of organisms unequally across trophic levels and thus lead to phenological mismatches between predators and prey. In cases where prey availability peaks before reproducing predators reach maximal prey demand, any negative fitness consequences would selectively favor resynchronization by earlier starts of the reproductive activities of the predators. At a study site in northeast Greenland, over a period of 17 years, the median emergence of the invertebrate prey of Sanderling Calidris alba advanced with 1.27 days per year. Yet, over the same period Sanderling did not advance hatching date. Thus, Sanderlings increasin…

Climate Zones of China

1988

Note: The climate zones respectively climate types, according to the climate regionalization scheme of Huang Bing-wei (1986), were described with particular reference to the major climate characteristics and their variation over space and time. Each climate zone also contains a climate map of China, showing distinctly the spatial distribution of the climate zone concerned. A climate diagram for a representative station was added which expresses the annual variation of precipitation and temperature, based on long-term monthly means.

Organic chlorine compounds in lake sediments. II Organically bound chlorine

1990

Abstract Organically bound chlorine together with inorganic chloride was measured from dated bottom sediment layers of 18 lakes in Central Finland and compared to organic matter contents. Pulp mills were found to be the source of significant increase of the accumulation of all of these materials in the 20th century.

Condensation nuclei at the German Antarctic Station “Georg von Neumayer”

1992

Evaluations of measurements of the tropospheric surface condensation nuclei at the German Antarctic station for the last 8 years are presented. They show clearly the annual variation of the concentration with a maximum in austral summer, as previously seen by other investigators. In addition, a pronounced increase of the concentration of 9.63% per year has been found. The size distributions of the condensation nuclei of measurements over 2 years are evaluated and discussed. On average, they are of mono-modal shape, but individually most of them show a bimodal shape. DOI: 10.1034/j.1600-0889.1992.00009.x

Gestion du pâturage au printemps en système bovin allaitant : diversité des pratiques en Saône-et-Loire

2009

National audience; Grazed grass is the cheapest forage for making meat'. In order to incite farmers to make their forage systems more self-sufficient and thrifty, the 'Chambre d'Agriculture de Saone-et-Loire' (a professional agricultural organization for that departement) has been monitoring for five years the management of spring grazing on 23 farms. The analysis of farmers' practices lead to considerations as to put to the best use the grazed grass, according to the pedo-climatic conditions and the constraints of the farms. With the aim of optimizing the pasture resources in order to limit the purchase of concentrates and to cope with the climatic hazards, the study of the management of s…

Épidémiologie du cancer du pancréas

2018

Actually, pancreatic cancer is a major challenge in digestive oncology. Its prognosis remains very poor with a five-year net survival less than 10%. Although if pancreatic cancer incidence was low, data from French digestive cancer registries show a dramatic increase in recent years, more marked in women (annual variation of +3.6% between 1982 and 2012) than in men (+2.3%). The currently recognized risk factors like tobacco or obesity cannot explain this evolving epidemiology. Moreover, progress in understanding pancreatic carcinogenesis is still insufficient. Except for familial aggregation, systematic screening couldn't be proposed.

Influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation on Southern African summer rainfall

2007

Rain-causing mechanisms over Southern Africa (south of 15˚S) involve both tropical and temperate dynamics. Most studies focused on the synoptical timescale, while the intraseasonal (20-120 days) variability has more been neglected to date. This study aims at determining whether the dominant mode of intraseasonal variability in the Tropics, namely the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), has a significant impact on Southern African rainfall and associated atmospheric dynamics. The examination of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) over Southern Africa shows indeed significant intraseasonal fluctuations at the 30-60 day timescale, i.e. in the pe- riods that are typically reminiscent of the MJO. In ord…
